As usual I've been busy. Last Saturday I gave a fabric dyeing lesson. There were only 3 in the class so we looked at a number of different techniques including a quick demo of breakdown screen printing.

Comme d'habitude , je étais bien occupé. Samedi dernier j'ai donné un cours de teinture. J'avais 3 élevé donc nous avons eu le temps de voir plein de techniques différent – même “breakdown screen printing” ou le sérigraphie décomposé.

I had a plain pair of white canvas sneakers so threw them in to be dyed. I like the result. Daughter was home for a few days from Uni and she needed some new sneakers so I sent her home with the ones I'd just dyed. I'll now have to buy some more for me plus a pair of high top ones for a friend's step-daughter. Might have to do some for my niece as well. Oh, and Daughter has asked for another pair but this time in black and red.

J'avais un pair de basket tout simple en toile que j'ai décidé d'ajouter au teinture. Je les aime bien. Ma fille était en visite pour quelques jour et elle avais besoin de nouveau basket alors je le a donné. Maintenant je dois acheter encore des basket simple pour mois en plus un pair remontant pour la belle-fille de une copine et sans doute pour ma nièce. Ma fille a déjà commander un autre pair mais en noir et rouge.

I wasn't going to but....

Je me suis dit que je ne ferrais pas cette hiver mais....

It snowed quite a bit the other day so there is a lot of snow around at the moment. It seemed a shame not to take advantage of it so I decided to do some more snow dyeing. I did some last year and thought the results were quite nice. Of course I decided to do this on a Sunday evening. I looked around at what pre-washed fabric I had laying about. There were various bits and pieces but I couldn't say exactly where they were from other than they were all cotton. There was also some white cotton jersey knit so a couple of pieces of that were thrown in as well as a couple of kid's t-shirts.

Il a neigé l'autre jour donc pas mal de neige par terre ici. C'était dommage de ne pas m'en profité alors j'ai décidé de faire la teinture au neige. J'ai déjà fait l'année dernier et j'aimais bien les résulter. Bien sûr j'ai décidé d'en faire le dimanche soir. J'ai trouver les pièces de coton pré-laver que trainer par ici et la dans la maison. Même deux morceau de jersey et deux t-shirt pour enfants.

I soaked them all in soda ash solution for about 30 minutes before hand wringing them out and putting them in various containers where I packed them down quite well. The soda ash solution I saved in a couple of jerry cans for future use.

Tout était mis à tremper dans un solution de carbonate de sodium pour 30 minutes avant de les essoré à la main avant de les mettrez bien tassé dans divers bols. J'ai récupéré la solution de carbonate de sodium dans les jerricane en plastique pour le ré-utiliser un autre fois.

Next I put them outside so they could cool down. You could even let them freeze if you aren't as impatient as I am. I left them while we ate so a good 30 minutes. Given that it is about minis five degrees they got quite cold. Next I packed snow on top of the fabric. The snow at the moment is powder snow so very light and dry.

Puis je les à mis dehors pour les refroidir. Vous pouvez même les laisser jusqu'à congélation si vous n'êtes pas aussi impatient que moi. Je les a laissé pendant le repas donc un bonne 30 minutes. Après j'ai mis de neige dessous. Comme c'était de poudreuses c'était très sec et léger.

I carried them inside at this point and put them in my dye studio (aka the spare bathroom that we haven't renovated yet and our friends tell others about the fun colours the old enamel bath has become). I used up some dyes that I had mixed up a few weeks ago so not sure how strong the colours will be. I trickled different dyes on the snow – usually only 2 colours per container. For a couple I used a number of different shades of red for one and blues for the other.

J'ai ramené dans la maison dans mon atelier de teinture (le vieux salle de bain que nous n'avons pas encore rénovée et sur lequel nos aimes rencontre les histoires concernent les couleurs drôle de la vieux email de la baignoire). J'ai finis les teintures mélangé il y a quelques semaine donc je ne suis pas très sur de leur efficacité. J'ai versé les teintures en filet sur la neige -en général deux couleur par bol. J'ai fait avec les teinte de rouges diffèrent pour un ou deux et les teintes diffèrent des bleus pour un autre.

Now the hard part – leaving them alone. The dyes should wick through the snow plus of course the snow needs to melt. After the snow has melted they need to be left to batch so probably a 12 hour or longer wait depending on the temperature in the room where they are sitting.

Maintenant le parti le plus dure – les laisser pendant plusieurs heures. Les teintures traverse la neige et en plus la neige se fondre. Après la neige est fondu il faut laisser pour que les teintures forme les liens chimiques avec le tissu donc au moins 12 heures en fonction de la température dans la pièce ou ils sont.

The next morning time to rinse and wash the fabrics before drying and ironing them. I like the results.

Le lendemain matin place au rinçage puis lavage avant de les séché et repasser. Je suis contente avec les résultés.

Paris Salon L'Aiguille en Fête

Just a quick word to let you know I'm in Paris. I managed to navigate the ring road at the really busy going home time and I didn't get lost or make a wrong turn at all!

This afternoon my niece helped unload the car and set up the stand. The salon opens tomorrow at 9 am so hopefully I'll be really busy. I'll let you know how it went when I get back home.

Juste un petit mot pour dire je suis à Paris pour Le Salon D'Aiguille en Fête. Je suis contente car j'ai reussi de prendre le peripherique au heures de point sans problém. Aujourd'hui j'ai installé le stand avec l'aide de ma niece. Je vous raconterai tout quand je suis rentrée chez moi.

It has snowed again here. I love the snow when it stays up in the mountains. I don't like it when I have to clear it from in front of the house or when I have to drive in it.

Encore du neige! J'adore le neige quand il reste en haut sur les montagnes. Je ne l'aime pas quand je doit déneiger devant la maison ou si je droit conduire.

Yesterday was exciting as my first order for the SewEzi tables arrived. Of course the delivery truck couldn't get to the house as there are low hanging electric wires and the street is narrow. The pallets were 1 metre square and stacked 2 meters high so we couldn't get then down the street as they risked falling over. Oh – the street is on a slope as well. This meant the pallets were unloaded into a small side street about 30 metres from the house. I then spent a couple of hours unpacking the pallets and transporting the tables to the garage. I used my car to carry 12 tables at a time – there are 110 in all.

Hier j'ai eu l'excitation quand mon première commande des tables SewEzi pour machine à coudre est arrivé. Bien sûr la camion ne pouvez pas venir dans notre rue car il y a des fils électrique qui pend trop bas et le route est très étroit. Les palettes sont 1 mètre carré mais 2 mètre de hauts donc impossible de les faire descendre dans le route sans risque qu'ils tombe – et en plus le route est en pente. En fin les palettes était mis dans un ruelle à 30 mètres de la maison. J'ai passé les deux heures suivants à défaire les palettes et les apporter dans mon garage. J'ai comme même utiliser ma voiture pour transporter 12 à la fois. Ils sont 110 en total.

All this stopping and starting meant the car battery went flat so I had to see if any neighbours were home and if I could borrow their car to jump start my car. This added an extra half hour to getting the tables stacked in the garage. I just managed to get everything put away before I had to leave to teach an English class. It started snowing while I was teaching. The garage is now full of tables. I will have to move hem downstairs over the next few days so I can put my car away.

A cause de démarrer et arrêter le moteur de ma voiture le batterie était vide donc la voiture ne marcher plus. Je suis aller chercher des voisin que étions chez eu et que pouvez m'aider. Heureusement une de mes voisines était la et nous avons eu des câbles. Tout ça à pris encours du temps mais j'ai comme même tout ranger avant de partir pour donner un cours d'anglais. Il a commencé de neiger pendant mon cours.
La garage est maintenant rempli des tables. Je serai obligé de les descendre en bas bientôt pour que je peu ranger ma voiture au garage.

En premier, une grande Merci à tous ce que m’avais dit les si gentil mot sur mon retour au blog.

Well the snow has well and truly arrived. It has been cold enough that it hasn’t melted yet. I know it looks pretty but I do prefer my snow up in the mountains. It looks pretty and I don’t have to drive in it not take the dog for a walk in it. The dog has been enjoying the walks in the snow. Of course she is like a 3 year old child – will only listen when it suites her and comes inside with wet snowy feet.

Ou il est joli à regarder et je ne suis pas oblige de conduire ni promener le chien dedans. La chienne aime bien le neige mais bien sûr elle est comme une gosse de 3 ans – elle écoute seulement quand ça se l’arrange et elle fait entre la neige dans la maison.

I’ve been busy organising stands at a couple of shows. I have a stand at Aiguille en Fête in Paris in February. I will be in the Découverte part. After that I’ll be at Pont de Clax near Grenoble (27 & 28 March) for the show that is put together by the association Iceberg. The money goes towards helping families with autistic kids and then 15 to 18 April there is Quilt Expo en Beaujolais.

J’ai organisé les stands dan plusieurs salon dans les mois avenir. En premier j’ai un stand au Salon D’Aiguile en Fête à Paris en février. Je serai dans le parti Découverte. Après c’est au Pont de Clax, à côté de Grenoble avec l’association Iceberg le 27 et 28 mars suivi de Quilt expo en Beaujolais le 15 au 18 avril.

One reason for doing all these shows is that I have just negotiated to be the French, Italian and Swiss distributor for the SewEzi tables from NZ. Hopefully the tables will arrive before the end of the month. My car will have to go live outside to begin with as the first delivery is about 6 cubic meters. That will have to go in the garage to begin with.

La raison pour tante de salon est parce que je viens le distributeur des tables SewEzi pour la France, l’Italie et la Suisse. J’espère que les tables arrivent avant la fin de mois. Ma voiture sera oblige de dormir dehors parce que la première livraison st de 6 mètres cube et donc ils seront stockés dans le garage au débout.

A selection of fabrics I dyed

After a long break I have decided to get back to the blog. Rather than tell you what has happened over the last few months I’ll go straight to the latest news.

Après plusieurs mois d’inaction j’ai décide de continue avec mon blog. Je commence avec la dernière actualité.

I’m really excited to have my first ever article published. It is in the latest edition of the French magazine Création Patchwork.

Je suis super content car mon premier article est publié dans la dernier Création Patchwork.

There are two parts to the article. The first is a basic how to on dyeing fabric with procion dyes. The second part is a plaid to make using the fabric dyed in part one. The plaid is a basic 9 patch star but with 3D features.

En fin il y a deux parties. Le premier est comment teintez vos tissus avec le teintures procion et le deuxième est le réalisation du plaid avec les étoiles en 3D.

On another note here are two photos from my sewing room window. One in October and the other today. Sorry the one from today isn’t very clear but we’ve had nothing but low grey skies for the last couple of weeks so took what I could in a clear patch. Heavy grey clouds are back.

I haven’t updated this blog for way too long. I was in the Lubéron the other weekend for a Patchwork Show. It was called Aiguilles en Lubéron. This is the first year that the show was organised and they did a very good job of it all. There were a few bits and pieces that no doubt will be done better in the coming years. Je n’ai rein écrit depuis trop longtemps. J’étais au salon d’Aiguilles en Lubéron l’autre weekend. C’était la première édition de salon et j’ai trouvé très bien. I had a stand in the merchant’s hall where I was selling procion dyes and other bits and pieces so unfortunately I didn’t get to see any of the expo. On the other hand I meet lots of lovely, interesting people.

I spent the week unpacking and catching up after 4 days away and then this weekend I was at a seminar for Oxalis http://www.oxalis-scop.org/, the co-op I belong to. It was held up in the Chartreuse http://www.parc-chartreuse.net/accueil.asp where the strong green or yellow liqueur is originally from.

Au retour à la maison, j’ai passé mon semaine à attrapée mon retard. Cet weekend j’ai passé au séminaire d’Oxalis http://www.oxalis-scop.org/ , le co-op au lequel je fait parti. C’était dans La Chartreuse entre La Savoie et L’Isère http://www.parc-chartreuse.net/accueil.asp .

All this means that I haven’t had time to play much lately. I am also busy getting a web site and on line shop up and running. The shop part is basically done but I still have a bit to do before the rest of the site is up. Of course I’m trying to do all this in English and French. I have a friend working on the Italian and Spanish versions of the shop. By the way it is called TeintureTextile.

Avec tout ça je n’ai pas eu le temps pour jouer avec les teintures. En plus je suis très occupé avec le création dur site web et le mis en place du site de vente en ligne. Le vent en ligne est un peu près fini mais il y a encore pas mal du travail à faire pour le site web. Bien sur tout est en Anglais et Français. J’ai une copine que travail sur les versions Italien et Espagnole. Avant que j’oublie le nom est TeintureTextile

Doesn’t time fly when you are having fun – or in my case being busy. I finally finished knitting my knee length socks and promptly started another pair. I’m enjoying knitting plain socks. Comme les temps passé vite quand on fait quelque chose amusant. En fin, mes chaussettes sont fini, bien sur j’ai commence une autre pair tout de suite après. Je fais les chaussettes tout simple. I have also been preparing my classes. I taught a quilt-as-you-go class last Saturday. As I knew the ladies in the class had a good level I decided to change the class so we made more complex blocks. Of course this threw my timing out so we only managed to do 4 blocks instead of 6. Anyway here are some of the blocks we did.

J’ai aussi passé mon temps à prépare un cours sur Quilt-as-you-go. C’est une méthode ou tu monte le bloc sur la doublure et le molleton en même temps. Comme je sais que les dames dans le cours avais un bon niveau j’ai changer les bloc pour le cours. J’ai mal calculer le temps nécessaire. Nous avons fait 4 blocs au lieu de 6. Snow and dye/ le teinture avec le neige

During the February school holidays it snowed so I decided to try snow dyeing. I managed to wash some white cotton and put it to soak in a soda ash solution. That evening I put the soaked fabric into various plastic containers, covered with a thin layer of snow and then I sprinkled dye powder mixed with salt on top of the snow. As the snow melted, I poured the liquid over another piece of soda ash soaked fabric in a bucket. I did this so the fabric didn’t sit in a puddle of dye solution. After about 5 hours the snow had melted so I covered it with cold water and left it to soak overnight

Pendant les vacances de février nous avons eu de la neige donc j’ai décidé d’essayé la teinture avec. J’ai lavée mon tissu et puis je l’ai trempé dans un solution de carbonate de sodium ( rehausser de ph pour piscine). Le soir même, j’ai mis le tissu dans les containers avec une couche de neige dessus. J’avais mélange le poudre de teinture avec du sel dans les petites bouteilles style épice avant de verser ce mélange sur la neige. Au fur et au mesure que la neige a fondu, j’ai verse le liquide sur un autre tissu pour que le tissu avec neige n’soit pas dans une flaque d’eau et teinture. Après 5 heures la neige avait tout fondu, j’ai rempli les basins avec d l’eau froide et les laissé le nuit.

The next morning I gave it a hot water rinse before popping it into the washing machine for a 60°C wash. I am not sure if the results are that different to what I normally do. Anyway it was fun to try

Le lendemain j’ai rincé les tissus à l’eau chaude avant de les lavée à 60°C. Je ne suis pas sure si les résulté sont si différent de ma façon usuelle mais c’était comme même amusant de la faire.

I also sprinkled the dye and salt mix directly onto a piece of soda ash soaked fabric to see what happens. I think I’ll play with this idea some more.

J’ai aussi versé le mélange de teinture et sel sur du tissu déjà trempé dans la solution du carbonate de sodium pour voir qu’est qu”il passé. Je pense que je ferai encore les essais avec cette technique.

Last Sunday I braved the weather and drove the 2 hours down to Crest in the Drome. A friend from art class kept me company and provided a very yummy picnic lunch.

Dimanche dernier j’ai pris mon courage dans mes mains pour affronter le mauvais temps pour me rendre au Fête de la Laine à Crest dans La Drôme. Une copine de classe de dessin est venue avec moi. C’est elle qui a fourni un pique-nique très apprécié.

The exhibition was not big but of good quality. Most of the textile artists were French but there were a few from elsewhere. I met Chris Orvis who lives in the south of France but spent many years in Scotland and is originally from New York state in the USA. L’expo n’était pas très grande mais de bonne qualité. La plupart des artistes textile était française mais il avait quelques-unes d’ailleurs. I was very pleased to find someone just up the road from me who uses natural dyes. She offers classes at her place so am now saving up for a couple of classes with Martine Vallet at L’Atelier des lutins. She doesn’t have an Internet site but if anyone wants her contact details just e-mail me.

J‘étais très content de trouver Martine Vallet qui habite tout près de chez moi en Savoie. Elle fait la teinture avec les plantes et en plus elle des cours. The third very interesting person I met is an Australian, Christina Zofall Wilson, who has lived in Europe for the last 34 years. She does the most wonderful felt work. She also offers classes and doesn’t live too far from here – probably about 11/2 hours rive away. Her classes are aimed more at professional felters and those who want to work at that level. Cocoon coat

I’m pleased, as I’ve just finished this coat for a friend. It is from hand dyed fabric that another friend bought back from Burkina Faso a couple of years ago. The pattern is a Carol Lane-Saber design http://www.saberdesigns.cc/patterns.html It is the Cocoon coat. I’ve also made the Mompe pants. They are very comfortable but the sizing is very large and the crotch is cut low so had to make a few alterations to them.

Je suis bien content car j’ai fini cet manteau pour une copine. Le tissu est teinté main et vient de Burkina Fasse. Une autre copine l’a ramené il y a quelques années. Le modèle est par Carol Lane-Saber http://www.saberdesigns.cc/patterns.html. C’est le Cocoon. J’ai aussi fait les pantalons Mompe Pants. Ils sont très confortables mais tailler large avec la fourche assez base donc j’ai fait les petites altérations.

I also finished my January Challenge piece for the British Quilt List (BQL) – a yahoo group. Of course I did it at the last minute. Will try to get February’s done earlier. I now have time to get back to finishing my winter-coat, as I really want to be able to wear it before it starts to warm up again

En plus, j’ai fini ma pièce de janvier pour le challenge sur British Quilt List (BQL), un groupe sur yahoo. Bien sur, j’ai tout laisser jusqu’au dernier moment. Bon, maintenant, j’ai le temps de finir mon manteau d’hiver. Je le vieux avant que le printemps arrive.

I have been a busy little vegemite the last few days. I’ve been dyeing fabric. My local P&Q shop http://www.librefil.com/ has a stand at the Creativa show in Grenoblethis weekend and she is stocking my hand dyed fabrics and embroidery floss as well. I was kept busy with dyeing, rinsing, ironing and folding the fabrics. All in all I’ve supplied her with about 50 meters of fabric. This is my first attempt at selling the fabrics so will be interested in seeing if they sell. Hope so.

Threads/ les moulinés

J’étais bien occupé ces derniers jours. J’ai teinté des tissus. Mon magazine du patch le plus près http://www.librefil.com/ , est à Creativa à Grenoble ce weekend et elle à pris mes tissus teinte main. Elle à aussi pris les fils moulinés que j’avais teinte. Au total, elle à pris au tour de 50 mètres de mes tissus à vendre. C’est la première foi que je vends mes tissus donc j’espère que ça marche bien.

We had a busy time with family from New Zealand over. It was the first time they have ever had Christmas in winter so at last they were happy to have snow on the ground. We also had friends from New Zealand come and stay a couple of days. Their big excitement was to go skiing up in the Bauges.

Les vacances étaient bien charger avec la famille de Nouvelle Zélande chez nous. C’était la premières fois qu’ils ont passé Noël en hiver. Au moins ils étant contente d’avoir le neige par terre. Les amis Néo zélandaise sont passé quelques jours chez nous aussi. Pour eux le grand truc était de faire du ski dans Les Bauges.

I spent the time before the holidays getting a couple of orders out and clearing out the bathroom I have been using to dye fabrics. I moved everything down to the cellar where the washing machine is. Still a bit of work to do down there until I finally have a wet studio. The major problem is that there is no hot water and it is very expensive to put in a hot water cylinder due to a lack of space. At the moment I am thinking of getting a gas ring and a gas bottle to heat water, as I need it.
I am starting to sell my hand dyed fabrics through the local Patchwork shop “ Libre Fil” in Chambéry.

Avant les vacances j’ai passé mon temps de finir quelques commandes et de ranger la sale de bains u je faisais la teinture. J’ai mois tout le matériel ans le cave ou j’ai la machine à laver. Il y a encore les choses à faire pour qu’en fin j’aie un atelier de teinture. Le plus problématique est l’eau chaude. Il sera difficile de mettre un chauffe-eau dans la cave. En ce moment, je pense mettre une bouteille de gaz avec un tripode.
Je commence de vendre mes tissus teintés à la main au magazine de patch Libre Fil à Chambéry. Je donnerai les cours de patch en mars, avril et mai aussi chez Karine

Lastly I made a couple of Christmas presents. I gave the December bag (from the BQL challenge) and a second one I made as presents. I also made some book covers.

I put in my application to teach at the Carrefour Européen in Alsace in September. I thought some fairly traditional classes might make a change so in put in to teach machine-pieced hexagons, a quit-as-you-go sampler plus basic machine quilting. I should get a reply at the end of the month.

En plus, j’ai envoyer mon application pour donner des cours au Carrefour Européen du Patch en Alsace en septembre. Ces sont plutôt les cours traditionnelles. J’ai propose un cours des hexagones ou jardin de grand-mère monter machine, un sampler ou vous construit et quilt chaque bloc en même temps plus un cours de matelssage machine. J’aurais la réponse fin janvier.

November bag for BQL challenge/sac pour challenge sur la liste BQL

It has turned cold here. Snowed the other week and there is still snow hiding in the garden. This means I have to get a wriggle on and finish my winter coat. It is a Fait Main (French craft magazine with mainly sewing, knitting etc. Owned by Burda)-pattern from a few years ago. It is long with a very full hem. I have made it in grey. Those who know me well will not be surprised by this choice. Anyway, it is a bit on the boring side so have decided to add some colour around the hem. I had intended to embroider this and even dyed a whole lot of thread. I have decided I need the coat this year so will couch thread using a continuous line quilting pattern. I’m going to use some thread made from old saris that I got when in Nepal a number of years ago.

Le froid est arrive. Il a neigé l’autre semaine et il y a toujours de la neige cache dans le jardin. La conséquence est que je dois fini mon manteau d’hiver. C’est un patron du Fait Main datent de quelques années. C’est un manteau long avec un ourlet très large. Sans surprise pour eux que me connais bien, c’est en gris. J’ai décide que c’est un peux triste et je veux ajouter de couleur autour d’ourlet. Au début, j’ai voulu fait en broderie mais comme je veux mon manteau pour cet hiver, je n’aurai pas de temps. J’ai décide de le faire à la machine en utilisant un modèle pour matelassage en continue et un fil fait du vieux sari indien. J’ai acheté le fil au Népal il y a quelques années.

Cows/Les vaches

Today’s excitement has been cows in the garden. They got through the fence again and 4 have spent the day eating what they can. Finally managed to get hold of the owner but by then it was nearly dark so he should be coming past tomorrow to get rid of them and to look at the damage they have done.

L’événement d’aujourd’hui c’est les vaches dans notre jardin. Ils sont entrés du pré derrière pour la deuxième fois et 4 d’entre eux sont passé la journée de manger tout qu’ils peuvent. J’ai enfin contacté le propriétaire mais c’était trop tard pour ce soir. Il doit passer demain matin pour ma débarrassé d’eux et aussi pour regarder les dégâts.

While watching TV over the last few evenings, I have added a crochet edging to an old T-shirt I put down to make a bolero. I used thread I had hand-dyed. It definitely looks wearable now.

Pendant que j’ai regardé le tele ces derniers quelques soir, j’ai ajouté du crochet au vieux T-shirt recoupé en boléro. J’ai utilise le fil que j’avais teinté à la main. Je suis assez content de la résulte.

On Friday I am teaching an all day class on FMQ (free motion quilting) at the local quilt shop Libre Fils. I enjoy teaching this as it is fun to see how everyone goes from “I can’t” to “Oh, it is really quite easy”. The class is full but if anyone is interested then I am free to travel if you want a class – just give me an idea of what you are interested in. It can be piecing, quilting, fabric dyeing, screen printing, sewing, pattern drafting, handbags…….

Lutradur piece

After a comment I made on the Quilting arts list, here is a photo of the piece that I was talking about. It is a piece of Lutradur that I used transfer paints on and then I hand needle felted various fibers onto it before doing some free motion work. I backed it with white felt. The edges are zigzagged together. To begin with I was happy with this piece but it now seems to be asking me to add beads. I don’t do much in the way of beading but this needs something more. I think the real problem is that there is no focal point so I need to create one. Also the line between the two parts is too hard - it cuts the piece in two so will have to alter that as well.

Sur la liste de Quilting Arts j’ai parlé de cette pièce, donc voila la photo comme promis. C’est fait avec une pièce de Lutradur sur lequel j’ai utilise les teintures transfert. Après j’ai ajouté les morceaux de tissu et les autres fibres, à la main, en utilisant les aiguilles à feutrine. En fin, j’I fait de piquage libre dessous avant d’assembler avec un moreau de feutrine blanche. J’ai fait de zigzag sur les bordures. Au départ j’étais content avec cette pièce mais depuis elle ma demande de mettre des perles. D’habitude je ne mis pas des perles mais elle à besoin de quelque chose de plus. J pense le vrai problème est qu’il manque un point focal, quelque chose qui attire l’œil donc à moi d’en faire un. En plus, la ligne entre les deux partis est trop dur – il coupe la pièce en deux, donc un autre détail que je dois changer

September bag for BQL challenge / sac de septembre pour la challenge sur BQL

Finally back after a very long pause – too long really. Life has been busy. I went up to Alsace to the European Quilt Show at St Marie au Mine. Like last year we shared a gîte. This year we were 9.

En fin je suis de retour après une pause trop longue. Comme toujours, je suis occupée. Je suis allé à St Marie au Mine pour le Carrefour Européen du Patch. Comme l’année dernier nous avons partage un gîte. Nous étions 9 cette fois.

We had a lot of fun, ate and drank too much and will be repeating the fun next year. Hopefully I’ll have a stand next year to sell procion dyes and my own fabrics etc. I might even manage to get accepted to teach a couple of classes. Hope so. Nous sommes bien amuse, et bien sur nous avons trop mangé et bu. L’année prochaine nous ferons la même chose. J’aurai un stand, j’espère, pour vendre les teintures procion et les tissus teint main que je fais. Si j’ai vraiment de la chance je donnerai les cours aussi.

Another house

I had a couple of weeks at home before going off again – this time to the UK. I had to get my daughter’s full-length winter coat made so I could take it to her in Glasgow. Managed to finish it sitting on the bed in the hostel. Of course I forgot to get a photo of it. I really like Glasgow and think we will have to take a trip or 3 there over the next few years while she is at university.

Next it was down to London and a trek from south to north so I could go to the Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace. I’m so glad they have a coatroom, as I was able to leave my suitcase there while I had a wander around. Managed to meet up with Bob and Maggie who have The African Fabric Shop. http://www.africanfabric.co.uk/ They were in the gîte in Alsace. I really love the fabrics they sell and one day will get lots and lots of indigo fabric from them. Maybe I should start saving now for next year in Alsace ……

J’adore les tissus qu’ils vendons et un jour j’en prendra les mètres et les mètres des indigo. Peut-être je dois commence de faire les économies maintenant pour Alsace 2010…..

Oxford University

After this it was Milton Keynes to spend time with friends and go to the Open University. Hopefully I’ll back there soon if a couple of things come together. As Janet was working on Saturday, Kevin took me to visit Oxford. What a lovely place. It was even more special as my mother-in-law did a science degree there between the two wars. She died not long after we married so it is nice to have some idea as to where she spent her youth.

Well another busy week – where does the time go? We are in back-to-school mode here so had to go buy the appropriate number, size and colour work books and so forth today. DS is changing schools. At his old school we just gave a cheque for the correct amount and all his school stationary was waiting for him on the first day. The new school does not have this scheme so we had to fight our way around the local supermarket. At least it is over and done with until next year. It feels as if we are in the calm before the storm of another school year hits.

Still working on the web site. I’ve made a prototype for the first free project. Well actually made two but the first one is really a trial run and need some modifications.

I have also been dyeing fabric again. I needed photos for one of the instruction sheets for the web site. I am not an organised dyer – I tend to go by a bit of this and some of that so I have great difficulty reproducing the same results. On the other hand, I don’t want lots of pieces of fabric the same. I’ll be selling some of my hand-dyed fabrics from the web site. I also hope to start selling both the dyes and fabrics at various quilt shows and craft fairs around the region. I’ll let you know when.

J’ai aussi teinté des tissus. J’ai besoin des photos pour un des fiche technique sur le site. Je ne suis pas très organiser quand je teinte des tissus. J’ajoute un peux de ci et de ça. Donc des gros problèmes pour reproduire un tissu. Par contre, je ne veux pas plein des tissus le même. Je vendrais mes tissus teinte main sur le site web. Je commencerais de vendre les teintures et les tissus au salon de patch et loisir créatif dans la région bientôt. Je vous tiens au courant.

Beading and holiday/ les perles et les vacances

Well just home after spending a week in Burgundy, Le Puisaye, to be exact. We have access to an old farmhouse there and go 2 or 3 times a year. Usually my brother and his family are there as well. This time it was just us and a friend with her 2 boys.

A couple of kilometres from the house we came across this field of flowers.

Je suis de retour après une semaine en Bourgogne, le Puisaye pour être exact. Nous avons le possibilité d’emprunter un maison de ferme la bas. Nous allons 2 à 3 fois par an. Souvent mon frère et sa famille est la aussi mais pas cette fois. Nous sommes allées avec une copine et ses 2 garçons. À 2 ou 3 kms de la maison il y a ces champs de fleurs.

We visited up in the roof. A fun thing to do. Anyway, near the end of the walk there are the servants’ quarters and a room set up as a laundry.

Nous avons visité le combles. Chose amusant à faire. Vers la fin de circuit nous avons v les chambres de bonnes et le grande pièce pour le linge propre.

This is a castle that is being built using 13^th century technology. It started about 12 years ago. We visit about every 2 or 3 years to see how they are getting along. You can walk around and see the stone masons making blocks for the castle walls, the people making terracotta style tiles for the roof, the woodworkers making beams and so on. They have some sheep and sometimes they have a couple of ladies using a drop spindle or dyeing the wool. Not this time though.

Guédelon http://www.guedelon.fr/ était aussi sur notre itinéraire. C’est un château qu’est construit en utilisant les méthode et technologie de 13eme sicle. C’est possible de voir les tailleurs des pierres et ce qui fabrique les tuiles pour le toit. Il y a les bûcheron etc aussi. Quelque fois on peux voir les dames que fils le laine ou quenouille et qui le teinte au petit feu aussi. Malheureusement, pas cette fois.

In the old town there are quite a number of 15^th and 16^th century houses with the wooden framework. The cathedral is also worth a visit for some lovely stained glass work.

Bien sur nous avons visité Clamecy, la ville de plus proche. Dans le vielle ville nous avons trouvé les belles maisons de 15eme et 16eme sicles. La cathédrale aussi mérite le détour.

In between visits and collecting wild blackberries I found time to go through my lessons on beading from the Quilt University http://www.quiltuniversity.com/

I did my practise piece and now have to do my sampler. I’ll do that in front of TV in the evenings.

She will be here in Savoie just before Carrefour Européen de patch up in Alsace so I’m trying to arrange a fabric dyeing class for her to teach in Montmélian for Sunday 14^th September. It will be an all day class and priced at 50€ per person plus 10€ for dyes and 5€ for the association’s room that we will be using. Of course if anyone is interested in beginners dyeing classes at other times then I too am available to teach and I am open to the idea of going to different places as well. DH is very well house trained- he does all the cooking and so most of the grocery shopping as well.

Bien sur si vous ou votre club est intéressé par les cours de teinture je suis disponible et prêt de voyager. Mon mari est bien dressé donc aucune problème la. Déjà c’est lui qui fait le cuisine et aussi les courses. Je ne le prêt pas!

These are a couple of photos I took in Nepal in 2004. Nothing to do with the post - just a couple of photos I like. / Deux photo que j'ai pris en 2004 au Nepal. Rien à voir avec cette post - juste deux photo que j'aime.

What a busy week. I’ve been busy preparing the program for a series of classes I’m going to give on pattern drafting. Professionally I’m part of a co-op that is a government recognised training centre. This means I can give classes in companies etc. I sometimes give English lessons as I was an English teacher for about 15 years. I now have someone who wants lessons in pattern drafting and as I have a recognised qualification I can.

Encore une semaine charger. J’ai passé mon temps sur le mis en place du programme pédagogique su la coupe à plat. Je fais parti d’un co-op qu’est reconnu comme centre de formation agrée. Ca dit que je peux donner les cours dans les entreprises etc. De temps en temps je donne les cours d’anglais – j’étais prof d’anglais pendant une quinzen d’année. En ce moment j’ai quel un que veux les cours de coup à plat et comme j’ai mon CAP et en plus d’expérience je peux.

I have also been doing some clothes sewing. I started with a trouser pattern I drafted and made a pair of pants. I’m pleased with the fit. They have pocket openings as I’m sick of elastic waists, don’t want a zip and want something that I can still have a couple of centimetres to play with if I gain or loose a few kilos. BG

J’ai aussi fait de couture. J’ai commence avec un modèle de pantalon que j’ai tracé. Je suis content avec. Ils ont les ouvertures dans les poches pas que j’ai en marre de taille élastique ou avec fermeture éclaire. J’ai voulu les pantalons ou j’ai 2 ou 3 cm d’ajustement si je gain ou perdre (moins probable) quelques kilos.

The other pattern I used was for a split skirt or culottes. I altered the front to a V waistband and put a deep inverted pleat on each side of the lower front. Not sure if they are flattering but in the heat we’ve been having I don’t care.

L’autre patron est pour une jupe-culotte. Encore un patron que j’ai trace moi-même. Cette fois j’ai changé le devant pour avoir un empiècement que descend en V sur le milieu devant. Encours l’ouverture dans la poche. Ils sont plutôt comme les shorts baggy. Je ne suis pas sur qu’ils sont très flatter sur moi mas temps pis avec la chaleur en ce moment.

The rest of the sewing has been with commercial patterns. I also have DD, who is 19 yrs old, at home at the moment. She has decided to try doing some sewing so have been helping her. Will probably give her one of my older machines to take to Glasgow when she leaves for University in September.

Le reste de couture est avec les patrons commercial. Il y a ma fille de 19 ans qu’est avec nous pour l’été. Elle a décide d’essayé de faire quelques vêtements avec mon aide. Sans doute je le donnerai une de mes vieux machines à coudre pour quand elle part au fac à Glasgow en septembre.

Bag days/ les sacs, les sacs et encore les sacs

The last few days have seen some sewing done around here. I made my July bag for the BQL challenge and am rather pleased with it. This one is not up for adoption by anybody – I made it and I’m keeping it.

Ses derniers jours j’étais occupée de faire les sacs. J’ai fini le sac de juillet pour le challenge sur BQL(British Quilt List). J’aime bien ceci et cette fois c’est pour moi!

I also finished the bag for the musician. There are lots of pockets inside. I’m pleased with how it turned out. I think the fabric came out rather well.

J’ai aussi fini le sac pour le musicien. Il y a beaucoup des poches à l’intérieur. Je suis content avec et en plus je pense que j’ai bien réussi la création du tissu.

DD decided she wanted a bag to take with her for the weekend. She decided this at 5 pm – after we had made a trip to the fabric store. I told her to draw up her pattern and then helped her by explaining what to do. She chose one of the fabrics I had done in the shaving foam tutorial. It is black with white, silver and gold on it. She FMQed it in burgundy thread then sewed up the sides. She wanted white lining so she can find her bits and pieces inside her bag when in there is only low lighting. She managed all that OK but the bag was a bit limp still so I got her to cut some plastic canvas and we slipped that inside. She finished it this morning, ready to take with her this afternoon.

Ma fille à décide qu’elle veut un petit sac pour le week-end. Bien sur elle décide tout ça à 5 heures d’après-midi et après que nous sommes rentre de faire les course au magazine du tissu. Elle à tracée son model et choisi une de tissu que j’ai décorer en utilisant le technique de mousse de rasoir. C’est du blanc, argent et or sur fond noir. Elle l’a quilter en bordeaux et puis monter les côtes. La doublure est blanche pour qu’elle peut trouver ses affaires même dans une lumière sombre. I’ve got a t-shirt to decorate for a friend. The theme is Nepal and Buddhist symbols so have had some fun looking into all this. I was in Nepal a few years ago – we took a school trip of 17 students aged 14 –15 years – so already have some ideas about all this. I dyed the t-shirt and have now made some stamps.

To make the stamps I’ve used a soft rubber material that is really easy to carve. There are a number of different makes but the one I can get locally (well 70 kms away) is by Artimio.

Je dois décorer un t-shirt pour un copain. Le thème est le Népal. Et les symboles buddhist. J’étais au Népal il y a quelques années. Un voyage scolaire avec 17 élèves ages de 14 à 15 ans. Tous ça pour dire que j’ai quelques idées comme même sue le sujet. J’ai teinté le t-shirt et puis j’ai fait des tampons en utilisant un type de gomme. J’ai utile le marque Artimio pas que c’est ca que je trouve à Grenoble.

I also have a bag to get done for the husband of another friend. The husband is a musician so I’m going to decorate the fabric with a stencil of some music plus a couple of images of musical instruments. To make the screen prints I bought a beginners kit for StencilPro. These are small screens covered in a photosensitive film that you can expose using sunlight. I followed the instructions and it was all very easy. I’ve written to see if they will supply me as a reseller here in France but so far no reply.

J’ai aussi un sac à faire pour le mari d’une copine. Le mari est musicien et j’ai décide d’en faire les pochoirs du musique sur le tissu déjà teinte. Encore en orange – j’ai beaucoup joué avec les oranges il y a plusieurs mois. J’ai fabrique une sérigraphie en utilisant un kit StencilPro acheter aux US. L’écran est photosensible et j’ai exposé au soleil plusieurs second. C’est très facile. J’ai écrit aux fabriquant pour savoir s’il me fournit en tant que revendeur mais pas de réponse pour le moment.

Last weekend I flew down to Rome for a few days. It was time to catch up with a couple of school friends from New Zealand. One lives in Rome at the moment – her husband works for WFP (World Food Program) and the other lives in the UK. Last time we got together was 20 years ago in Mali. We’ve promised to get together again but not leave it for 20 years this time. The friend in Rome is only there for another 3 years before they return to the field so will try to make it within the next 12 months at least. 30 years ago none of thought we would be having a reunion in Rome.

Le week-end dernier je suis allée au Rome pour un réunion d’école avec deux amis. Une habite Rome en ce moment – son mari travail pour L’UN et l’autre habit à Londres. La dernier fois que nous étions ensemble remontre à 20 ans au Mali. C’est promis que nous n’attendons plus 20 ans avant le prochain réunion. Comme notre amis est à Rome pour les 3 ans à venir nous retrouverions dans le 12 prochain mois. Il y a 30 ans personne n’aura pensé que nous aurions un réunion à Rome

We did manage a minimum of sight seeing. We went to a lake north of Rome – where Tom Cruise & Katie got married. Anyway we stopped for a short stroll and icecreams (yummy yummy). I love the way the old houses cling to the cliffs and how the rooflines are all over the place.

Comme même, nous avons fait du minimum de tourisme. Nous sommes promener – en voiture- autour du lac au nord de Rome – la ou Tom Cruise et Katie se sont mariée. Nous sommes arrêter pour détend les jambes et manager une glace. J’adore la façon qui les maisons s’accroche à la falaise et les lignes des toitures sont toutes tordues.

Well I’m finally updating my blog after a long pause. Not sure why I haven’t been able to blog but maybe a reaction to personal things that have been going on. I have been busy but not a lot is quilt art related. I’ve had quite a bit of sewing to do for others. Amoungst the bits and pieces there has been a medieval inspired dress and trying to design a bra for a lady who has had both breasts removed due to cancer. The problem here is getting a fabric soft enough so the scar tissue isn’t irritated but strong enough to hold the prosthesis in place. The little bags of silicone are actually rather heavy – at least 300grams per side so gravity takes its toll during the day.

Bon, enfin des nouvelles après une pause. Je ne suis pas sure pourquoi je n’étais pas capable d’écrire mais sans doute c’est une réaction de ma part vis à vis ma vie personnelle. J’étais très occupée mais plutôt avec de couture qu’avec l’art textile. Parmi les choses que j’ai fait, il y a une robe d’inspiration médiévale pour une cliente plus un soutien-gorge pour une dame qui droit porter deux prosthèses. Le gros problème est de trouver une model et du tissu que ne frotte pas trop les cicatrices mais que peux supporter les poids. Une prosthèse pesse 300 gram et ça descende ver les bas en fin du journée.

I’ve been dyeing more fabric as the local orchestra has asked me to make them some sleeveless, reversible vests. They are black on one side and either blue or orange hand-dyes on the other. There are 30 of them.

J’ai teint encore du tissu pour l’orchestre du coin pas qu’ ils ont commande des vestes réversible. Un côté noir et l’autre en bleu ou orange. J’ai trente à faire.

I’ve been continuing with the BQL bag challenge. Still have July’s to do. I have a commission from a friend to make a bag for husband. He is a musician so needs something to carry his sheet music plus his phone and keys. Was thinking of something like an old fashioned school bag -such as my brothers had in New Zealand in the 1960’s- as he wants to be able to wear it on his back if possible.

Son mari est musicien et il à besoin de sac pour porter ses partitions du musique plus son téléphone portable et ses clés. Je pense qu je ferai un sac comme mes frères sont porter à l’école en Nouvelle Zélande dans les années 60.

The other thing I’ve done was to go to the new quilt show at Morzine, near the Swiss boarder. This is the first time they have organised a four-day event with a merchant’s hall and classes as well as the exhibits around the town. There were a few teething problems such as a lack of signs telling people where to go (this was due to small town politics) but otherwise a very promising start to what should be a bi-annual event. So sometime in early July 2010 the next show will take place.

En fin, je suis aller au expo à Morzine, près du frontière Swiss. C’est le première fois que ils ont organiser une expo du 4 jours avec une sale marchants et les cours en plus des expos dans les différentes lieux de village. Il avait quelque petit problème comme un manque d’affichage (changement du marie après les dernières élection municipal?) mais comme même un très bonne départ pour une expo qui doit se produire tous les deux ans. Donc début juillet 2010 pour le prochaine.

Well, I’ve finally found the time to write up the tutorial I promised on how I made a fabric bowl.

Bon, enfin j’ai trouvé le temps pour faire le tutorial sur les bols comme promis.

First I made a pattern. I cut out a big circle in paper. I used a very big pot lid – actually it goes over the frying pan. My circle is about 32 cm across.

Premier chose, j’ai tracé le patron sur du papier.

J’ai utilise le couvercle de poêle – ça fait environs 32 cms.

I folded it in half and then into thirds, from the central point of the circle.

Pliez le cercle en deux puis en trios, en partent du milieu de cercle.

Next I folded the bottom point up about 5 or 6 cms. When you open out your circle, it is divided into 6 equal wedges with a hexagon shape in the middle. Draw over these lines. Cut from the outer edge of the circle to the hexagon shape along the 6 radiating lines.

Après, j’ai pliez le point à environs 6 cm de point, vers le haut. En ouvrant le cercle, c’est divis en 6 avec un hexagone au centre. Tracer sur ces lignes. Couper les lignes radient du bord du cercle à l’hexagone central.

I used the fabric I had created for the outer fabric and plain black cotton for the inside of the bowl. I used fairly stiff interfacing on the back of the black fabric. My outer fabric was already fairly stiff, as it had been machined quilted with a cotton batting. If you are using a commercial fabric then I recommend interfacing it as well as machine quilting so it is fairly stiff.

Pour l’extérieur du bol j’ai utilise un tissu que j’avais crée et un coton noir pour l’intérieur. Je le doublure avec une thermocollant assez épais Mon tissu extérieur était déjà assez rigide car j’avais matelasse en pique libre, en utilisant un molleton cotton. Si vous utilisez un tissu commercial ça sera bien du doublure avec du thermocollant et de le matelassé en plus.

Cut a circle out of each fabric. Mark the radiating lines and central hexagon on the lining fabric. Place the 2 circles, wrong sides together. I find 505 basting spray helpful here as it keeps the layers from moving independently. Sew around the central hexagon – this is the base of your bowl.

Coupez un cercle dans chaque tissu.. Marquez les lignes radiantes et l’hexagone central sur le tissu noir. Mettez les 2 cercles envers contre envers. J’utilise le spray 505 pour éviter que les deus tissus bougent le une contre l’autre. Coudre autour de l’hexagone central – ceci est la base du bol.

Next, set your machine to a satin stitch. I used the same thread in the machine and in the bobbin. I found it looked better if I went around the top edge a number of times (5 or 6) with a slightly open satin stitch rather than once with a very tight stitch.

Réglez votre machine au point satin moyenne (point zigzag assez étroit) J’ai utilise le même fils dans le cannette et la machine. J’ai fait plusieurs tours (5 à 6) avec une densité moyenne au lieu de un tour avec un point très serré.

To create the sides of the bowl you need to form darts from the top edge of the circle to the corner points of the hexagon.

The larger you dart, then the steeper the sides of your bowl. Mine are about 5 cms at the top edge. It isn’t really very important so long as they are all the same.

Pour former les parois du bol, il faut faire les pinces du bord du bol au chaque coin du hexagone. Le plus large le pince, le plus étroit le bol. Les miens sont autour de 5 cm au bord mais ceci n’est pas très important s’ils sont tous du même mesure.

I sewed along this line a couple of times.

J’ai cousu sur cette ligne plusieurs fois.

Voila. The bowl is finished. Next time I might put a plastic lining so I can use it as a pot plant holder.

Et voila! Le bol est fini. Pour le prochain je le doublerai avec du plastique pour l’utiliser comme cache pot.

Hong Kong

Shoe at Hong Kong airport.

On our way to NZ we had a 7-hour stop over in Hong Kong. We spent our time wandering around the airport. This was the first time I had been to the new airport. Anyway, there were a number of exhibits from the museum and other places. I took a number of photos.

En route pour la Novelle Zélande nous avons eu 7 heures à Hong Kong. Nous sommes promener dans l’aéroport. C’est la première foi que je suis aller au niveau aéroport la bas. Il y a eu plusieurs expo dedans et j’ai pris quelque photo.

This artist has covered everyday clothing in porcelain and then fired it. The underlying fabrics have disappeared but their shape and other details remain.

Les vêtements étaient recouvrer de porcelaine avant d’être cuit. Le tissu a disparu mais la forme reste.

There were also shoes! I really must make the time to learn how to make my own shoes. I have the book « Make your own shoes » by Mary Wales Loomis. http://www.marywalesloomis.com/ so it is just a matter of creating a few more hours per day and days per week.

While in NZ I noticed the sky a lot. I spent most of my time in Hamilton where is gentle rolling country, so different from being surrounded by mountains as I am here in France. I also spent 3 days in Wellington, the capital. Saw these neat bits and pieces.

Well, I’ve arrived back from nearly a month in New Zealand. Unfortunately Dad’s condition was terminal but at least the immediate family was there to see him while he could still recognise and communicate with us. Although we will all miss him terribly he had a wonderful life and a great death. He was not afraid of what was happening to him and saw death as the beginning of another adventure. As my bother said at Dad’s funeral:

Je suis de retour après Presque un mois en Nouvelle Zélande. Malheureusement, mole maladie de mon père était terminale et il est mort pendant mon séjour. Au moins la famille immédiate était la pendant qu’il pouvait nous reconnaître. Il nous manqué terriblement mais il n’avait pas peur de mourir et il l’a vu comme le commencement de nouvelle aventure. Comme a dit mon frère en salutation au funérailles :

I have just received very bad news from New Zealand concerning my father and will be taking the next available flight from Paris so will not be adding anything over the next few days. I had hoped to get the tutorial on thee bowl making done but that will now have to wait for my return. I should be back sometime before the 20th April.

bags and bowls/ les sacs et les bols

Over the last few days I have been making friends with my new sewing machine – a Husquavana Sapphire 850. This is the first new machine I’ve had in 25 years so quite a learning curve after my mechanical Bernina.

Depuis quel que jours j’ai fait ami avec ma nouveau machine à coudre – une Husquavan Sapphire 850. C’est le premier machine neuf depuis 25 ans. Quel changement de mon ancien Bernina mécanique.

I made the blue bag as part of the bag challenge on BQL (British Quilting List). My stitch and flip for the stripes weren’t very straight but you can’t really see that.

Le sac bleu fait partie des sacs que je fais chaque mois pour le challenge sur BQL (British Quilting List) Mes bandes ne sont pas très droites mais ça ne voir pas beaucoup.

I have also made a bowl out of a piece of complex cloth I’ve made. I started out with some more of the hand dyed fabric I did but don’t really like.

EN plus j’ai fait un bol avec du “complex cloth” que j’ai créa. J’ai commence avec un mourceaux de tissu teinte à la main que ne me plaire pas trop.

I added a layer of MistyFuseä.

J’ai ajouté une couche de MistyFuseä. (Je l’aurai dans ma boutique en line que je lance courent avril)

This is what it looks like before ironed in place.

Next I took some artificial leaves, removed the plastic stems etc and scattered them on top of the MistyFuseä. I also added some scraps of chocolate wrappers I had saved from Christmas.

Après j’ai ajouté des feuilles artificielles, enlevant les tis en plastique avant, puis quel que morceaux de papiers de chocolat que j’ai gardé depuis Noël.

I thought some sparkly stuff was needed so added a bit of Angelina fibres as well. Ironed these in place – don’t forget to protect your iron!

Il y a besoin de “bling” ou les choses scintillent donc les fibres Angelina. N'oubliez pas de protiger votre fer à repasser!

Lastly I added a layer of black tulle, which was also ironed in place.

Et en fin, de tulle noir qu’était repasser sur le tout.

After making a quilt sandwich it is ready for some free motion work. I added a layer of iron-on facing and then a layer of batting that I spray basted in place with 505.

J’ai prépare un “sandwich” avant le faire du piquage libre par tout. J’ai mis d’entoilage thermocollant puis le molleton fixer en place avec la bombe 505.

My complex cloth is now ready to be used. I’ll add another posting in the next few days with details on how I created my bowl.

Maintenant mon “complex cloth” est prêt à être utiliser. Je mettrai une autre “poste” plus tard avec les photos de comment j’ai fabriqué les bol.

Paris

What a busy week. Last Friday I went up to Paris for a few days. There was a trade show so I decided to take advantage of the trip and spend a couple of extra days as it is years since I was in Paris. Luckily I can stay with my brother and his family so no hotels are needed.

Quelle semaine chargée ! Vendredi dernier je suis allée à Paris pour un salon professionnelle. J’ai en profiter pour passer quelques jours de plus car je ne suis pas aller à Paris depuis par mal des années. Heureusement, j’ai mon frère et sa famille la bas chez le quelle je peux loger.

I managed to see the Christian Lacroix exhibition at the museum Les Arts Decorative. Unfortunately no photos allowed but many of the clothes were not behind glass so I got a lovely close look at them. His creations were shown with clothing he had selected from the museum so it was fun to see where he had got some of his inspiration. I love these kinds of exhibitions but I do tend to get visual overload after about an hour.

J’ai vu l’exhibitions de Christian Lacroix au Musée des Décoratifs. C’était super mais après une heure j’ai une surcharge visual. Tout n’était pas dans les cabinet de verre donc plus facile de voir ses créations qui était montre avec les habilles des différent époque.

Too many people!

I tried to visit the Musée Quai de Branly but there was a queue I didn’t want to waste time in so instead I went to Montmartre. There were too many people there as well. I really am getting to be a country girl more and more – even if I did grow up in suburbia.

Je suis allée au Musée Quai de Branly mail trop de monde dans les fils d’attente pour moi. Je suis allée au Montmartre ou encore il y avait trop du monde. Je suis devenu campagnarde de plus en plus même si je suis grandi en banlieue.

I did manage to find the Indian area of Paris. It is right next to Gare de Nord so had a lovely time looking at sari there.

J’ai même trouvé le quartier Hindou à Paris. C’est à côte de Gare de Nord. Je me suis régalé en regardent les saris.

My final full day in Paris I spent at the Musée National du Moyen Age. The highlight of the visit was seeing the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries. I was surprised at how emotional it was. I also got to see an aumoniere or Almoner’s purse, which is a special sort of purse for alms giving. I have seen photos but was surprised at just how large it really was.

Pour mon dernier jour à Paris je suis allé au Musée National du Moyen Age ou j’ai vu les tapisseries de La Dame au Licorne. Je ne me suis pas attendu d’avoir senti une tel émotion. J’ai aussi vu un aumônier. J’ai déjà vu les photos mais en réalité c’était plus grand que j’ai imagine.

Dyed bamboo jersey knit/Tissu en bambou teinte à la main

Here is the sample of bamboo jersey knit I dyed the other day. I treated it just like cotton. I really like how it dyed up. I will dye up the rest and make a tunic for summer.

Voici un tissu en bambou que j’ai teinté. Je le fais comme du cotton. J’aime bien et je vais teinter le reste pour me faire un tunique pour l’été.

Here are a couple of others bits I’ve dyed. I really like the green one. It reminds me of looking up into the canopy of a forest and seeing the light filtering through.

Et encore les tissus que j’avais teintés. Ce lui en verte me rappel le lumière filtrer dans une forêt.

Scarves/les echarpes

I went out the other day and decided that if I was serious about selling some of my hand dyed fabrics then I had better start displaying them. I quickly made a scarf. After I had worn it once I thought it needed a fringe so have spent the last few evenings making a fringe. Maybe I’ll do some stamping on it as well. I’m going up to Paris on Friday to a trade fair so will wear it then. I think I’ll add a few rows of crochet to the next one. I have some thread that I dyed at the same time as I dyed some fabric. A third will probably have a beaded fringe.

J’ai sorti l’autre jour et j’ai pensé que si je veux être sérieux au sujet de vendre les tissus que je teints à la main il faut que je les montre en publique. Vite fait, j’ai fabrique une écharpe. Après avoir le porte une fois j’ai décidé qu’il a besoin de frange. Je feria les tampons dessous aussi. J’ai passé quelque soirée devant le télé de faire une frange. Le prochaine foi peut-être je feria un peu de crochet car j’ai des fils que j’avais teinté quand j’ai teinté les tissus. Sans doute le troisième sera avec une frange fait en perles.

Art Quilt

Here is one of my art quilts. I made it for a small exhibition last summer. It was inspired by the wake of a motor launch. We were invited to lunch on one of the restaurants on Lac du Bourget. It leaves from Aix les Bains and you spend a couple of hours cruising around the lake and getting fed some lovely food.

It is made with commercial fabric and iridescent plastic that is scrunched up and then free motioned embroidered all over. I then added small seed beads and French knots in various threads.

Voici un de mes quilt en art textile. Je l’a fait pour un petit exposition l’été dernier. L’inspiration vient d’écume derrière un bateau à moteur. Nous étions invitées au déjeuner sur un des bateaux avec restaurant sur le Lac du Bourget. Le départ est d’Aix-les-Bains. On passé quelques heures en balade sur le lac pendant qu’on mange très bien.

C’est fait avec un tissu commercial et du papier cadeau en plastique irisée que j’ai froissé avant de faire le piquage libre. Après j’ai ajouté les perles et les nœuds en fils divers.

A busy week/ Une semaine chargée

What a busy week. Monday evenings I have art class, which is fun. We are a small group and our teacher makes us work outside our comfort zones but is very supportive. On Tuesday I went to her place up in the mountains. This is not a very touristy area of the Maurienne. Here is a photo of a traditional shed where they used to store clothes and household goods. It is very unusual to see a thatched one.

Quelle semaine ! Lundi soir est cours de dessin. Nous sommes peu nombreuses et notre prof nous faire traveller hors de nos zones de conforts, qu’est bien. Mardi je suis montée chez elle dan les montagnes. Elle habite dans un petit village de montagne en Maurienne que n’est pas très touristique. Voici un photo de un petit abris que était utiliser pour stocker les costume etc. C’est plutôt rare d’en voir un avec le chaume.

We played with her printing press. At the moment I’m doing some work with feathers. We inked up some feathers and printed them onto paper and fabric. We used oil paint, as that was what we had to hand.

Nous avons joué avec sa presse. En ce moment je travaille au tour des plumes. Nous avons mis de peinture d’huile sur quelque plume et les imprimer sur du papier et du tissu.

I have finished the 30 scarves for the local village orchestra.

J’ai fini les 30 écharpes pour l’harmonie de village.

I am now working on the music stand cover. I want to put something on the front so it isn’t all black. I made a stencil using a stencil burner. Don’t forget to wear a mask and make sure the room is well aired!

Maintenant je travaille sur le couvre pupitre. J’ai voulu quelque chose pour que le devant ne soit pas tout noir. J’ai fabriqué un pochoir en utilisant une appareil comme une fer à souder mais spécial pour les pochoir. Il faut porter une masque et fais attention que le pièce est bien airée.

I did a few trials to see what method I wanted to use. A sponge gave the best results. I use the little make-up sponges I find at the supermarket. I realised at the end that I had been using the stencil back to front. At least it was for the trials and not on the real thing.

J’ai fait les essayes pour voir quelle méthode me convienne le mieux. Je préfère les effets avec l’éponge. J’utilise les éponges de maquillage trouver au supermarché. A la fin, j’ai réalise que mon pochoir était à l’envers. Au moins c’est sur les essayes et pas sur les vrais.

Saturday is market day in Chambéry. DH goes every Saturday to do the shopping. DS often goes as well and spends the morning at the library. I only go from time to time as I often teach a sewing class on Saturday mornings. Anyway, as it is the school holidays I didn't have a class so went to Chambéry. I leave DH to do the shopping and I do my bits and pieces. Met up with a girl-friend and we went to a bar for a drink. We were in front of the Marie(Town Hall) and saw these contraptions. I love the boat. After a while there was a lot of noise as the umpa band came and played on the steps of the Marie. The bike contraption started spewing out bubbles. It was quite fun and a lovely bightener on a dull damp day.

Samedi est jour de marché à Chambéry et mon mari part pour faire les course. Souvent notre fils part avec lui pour aller à la médiathèque. Moi, je vais que de temps en temps parce que je donne les cours de couture à Montmélain. Comme c’est les vacances scolaire je suis aller cette week-end. J’ai rencontré une amie et nous somme aller au bar devant le Marie. Voila qu’est ce nous ont trouvent – les drôles de machine. J’adore le bateau. Peux après il y a eu un orchestre qu’a joué devant la Marie. Le drôle de vélo a commence de cracher les bulles de savon. Quel bon façon d’égayer une journée morose.

In contrast, Sunday was a beautiful, warm sunny day so we took the dog for a long walk besides the river. Unfortunately the autroute is also a long the river so the noise is a bit of a nuisance. Still could hear the birds singing. Anyway here are a couple of photos of from our walk. The rest of the week is supposed to turn cold with snow on Tuesday or Wednesday. Will probably snow as the apricot tree is in flower. Since we planted it we have only had about 12 apricots in all as every year something happens so we don't get any fruit. Oh well we really are at the limit for apricot trees. Anyway the blossom is pretty.

Par contre, dimanche était une journée ensoleiller, chaud et très agréable. Nous avons promené le chien au bord de rivier. Malheureusement l’autoroute passe lui aussi à côté de rivier. Malgré tout nous avons comme même entendu chanter les oiseaux. Voici quelque photo de notre promenade. Le temps va changer cette semaine avec la neige prévue pour mardi ou mercredi. Typique, car l’abricotier est en fleur. Depuis que nous avons planté cette arbre nous avons eu que peux d’abricot. Chaque année il y’a quelque chose qu’empêchent les fruits. Je pense nous sommons limite pour faire pousser les abricotiers.

The end of the story/Le fin d'histoire

Well, what a lovely surprise to get all your comments and e-mails. Better than waiting for presents at Christmas!

A few of you pointed out that I hadn't told you everything about thee shaving foam fun so here is the rest of the story.

After I had pulled the fabric off the shaving foam I scrapped the excess off with the scrapper thingy and returned it to the black tub. I hung the fabric to dry before fixing the paints as recommended by the manufacturers. In my case that was by ironing them. It was a bit smelly but not too bad. A couple of days later I washed the fabric as normal. I only waited a couple of days as it was not very nice weather so the drying frame in the bathroom was already full of clothes. For some strange reason my family seem to think that me doing housework from time to time is a good thing.BG. Don't worry DS (13&1/2 yrs) is being taught the black art of how the washing machine is filled with dirty clothes and after pushing a few buttons and waiting an hour or so the clothes are clean but wet. The arcane intricacies of hanging these to dry is still a bit much for him to handle.

Quel plaisir de recevoir tous vos comment et e-mails. Plus excitant que les cadeaux de noël. Quelques-unes d’entre vous m’ont dit que l’histoire n’a pas fini donc voila la suite.

Après d’avoir retirer le tissu du bac j’ai enlevé l’excèdent du mousse. J’ai laisser séché le tissu avant de fixer le peinture comme recommandé par le fabricant. Dans cet case avec le fer à repasser. Deux ou trios jour plus tard j’ai lavé comme d’habitude dans la machine à laver.

Shaving foam marbling/ marbrier le tissu avec le mousse à rasoir

A little while ago I decided to finally try the shaving foam technique to marble some fabric. Most places recommend scent free shaving foam - this is not available round here so used the cheapest from the local supermarket. It was definitely a wiffy experience and I wont be doing any more until it is warm enough to have the windows open BG. It was fun though and very easy. We even tried it at my art class.
Anyway here a few pictures to show what I did.

Il y a quelque semaine que j’ai essayer le technique de marbrier le tissu en utilisant le mousse à rasoir comme base. Comme on ne peux pas trouver le mousse sans parfume c’était une peux désagréable comme activité. J’attends les beaux jours pour le refaire dehors. J’ai ajouté quelque photo pour montrer le procès.
Here is my basic set-up in the bathroom. I use black tubs form the DIY store that are designed for plaster and concrete.

Fabric paint dribbled over the shaving foam. I then used a comb, finger, old toothebrush etc to swirl the paints together.

Le peinture pour textile mis goutte à goutte sur le mousse. Après, j’utilise une peigne, veux brosse à dent, doigt, etc pour mélanger les peintures.

Here is the fabric on the foam. I gently patted it down so the paint was touching everywhere.

Voilà, le tissu sur le mousse. J’ai tapé doucement pour que le peinture était en contact avec tout le tissu.

Here is a photo of the second piece of fabric I did. I found that after about 3 or 4 prints it was time to change the foam. I scrapped of the layer of paint-filled foam and started again.

Beginnings/Le Debut

Having set up a blog it is now time to start posting. My intention is to share my adventures in the world of textiles with you plus the occasional more personal bits and pieces.

I started sewing at school and didn't really like it. As a stroppy teenager I bugged my Mum for a new skirt. Her reply was that she had already spent the money for my summer wardrobe and if I really wanted a new skirt the I could jolly well make one. So I did. The side seams were wonky, the zip in crooked, no seam finishing at all but the hem was straight and a passion was born. OK so it took about 25 years for the passion to really develop but the seeds were sown.

I am now a home based seamstress, doing mainly hems and fixing zippers. I am also a textile artist. I dye many of my own fabrics and love to play.

Here in France it can be difficult to find many of the basic supplies so I have decided to start an on-line shop selling procion dyes, transfer dyes, discharge paste, mistyfuse and other bits and pieces as I find them. Hopefully the shop will be up soon - the longest bit is translating everything into French and made even longer as my written French isn't the best so have to get everything doubled checked.

This is a quilt made for my Aunt in New Zealand. It is based on one of her mother's flax weaving patterns. I hand dyed and painted the fabrics.

Quilt fait pour ma tante en Nouvelle Zélande. C'est baser sur un modèle du tissage du "flax" créa par sa mère. J'ai teinté et peint les tissus.

Je suis installe chez moi comme couturière. En plus je fais de l’art textile. Tout ça à commencer quand j'étais ado.

J'adore teindre et peint le tissu chez moi. Comme j'ai du mal à trouver les produits comme les teintures procion mx en France, j'ai décidé de monter mon propre commerce sur internet. J'"espere que ça sera prêt bientôt. La plus longue est de tout traduire en français!
